Then we get the redeeming answer we’ve been waiting for. The approval for Rajesh’s visa to the Bahamas. Joy, pride, happiness and a feeling of euphoria are the first emotions that pass through us, but immediately afterwards we also have emotions such as sadness and a sense of loss, because this means that we will soon say goodbye to our good friends, whom we met during sailing. We have always known once we get to the North of Guadeloupe that the seas will take Mabul’s crew and us sailing to other lands. It feels extra special when you have such a special click with the crew of another boat, which makes you decide to sail to the North together for a few months, celebrate the holidays together, discover countries together and to meet new people in those countries. We are therefore grateful for the experiences and memories we have shared with Mabul so far. We decide to postpone our farewell a little further and that we will discover another island together and that is Montserrat.

In the town of Deshaies, Guadeloupe, where we check out, it is very busy because of the day tourists who are there in buses at the same time, presumably from Pointe-à-Pitre where the cruise ships dock. When we arrive at the dinghy jetty in the evening to eat a tasty pizza, the whole city appears to have been affected by a power cut. That means cooking on board. The next morning, we sail towards Montserrat at 5:30 AM. A sailing trip of 40 NM that will take us about 7 hours. It is still dark when we raise the anchor and set course for Montserrat. Our eyes are still small when we hoist the sails and then take a sleepy seat in the cockpit, which reminds me of a comment from Rajesh about his brain. Rajesh sometimes says, “On the right side there is nothing left and on the left side there is nothing right.” It certainly feels that way right now, after nights tossed from left to right on rollery anchorages, often not getting a wink of sleep. Staring over the water, while the sun slowly rises behind the mountain peaks of Guadeloupe, from which we say goodbye, and Mabul sailing close behind us, we slowly wake up. The colours that the sunrise brings provide some beautiful photos.

I had never heard of the island of Montserrat before Mabul’s crew asked us to explore this island together. It is an island that has been hit by several types of natural disasters, the most important being Hurricane Hugo that hit Montserrat on September 17, 1989 and destroyed 90% of all houses and infrastructure and later, after everything was rebuilt in 1997, destroyed the Soufrière Hills- volcano the southern part of Montserrat. The Soufrière Hills Volcano, which is still active and has erupted several times in recent history, with the main eruptions occurring in 1997 and from 2010 to 2019.

As we sail closer to the southeast of the island of Montserrat, the path left by the volcanic activity is through the pyroclastic flows, which are fast-moving mixtures of hot gas, ash and rock fragments that descend the volcano’s slopes at high speeds, spilling everything onto destroy their path, clearly visible from the water. What appears to be a permanent cloud over the top of the volcano is later revealed to be the sulphur-scented gases rising from the still-active Soufrière Hills volcano. When we sail to the southwest side of the island, the complete destruction of the capital Plymouth can be seen. When we later walk over part of this devastated area during a tour of the island, it turns out that the height of the amount of rock fragments and ash is up to almost three floors. The sulfur gases, which smell like rotten eggs, we can smell well on the southwest side, where at first we think that something is spoiling in the freezer or refrigerator, but then we realize that it is the gases from the Soufrière Hills volcano. Slowly we sail further up and wonder how it feels for people who live on this island to be confronted again and again with the uncertainty that comes with living near an active volcano. In the distance, we see a boat approaching us at high speed, where we first quickly check whether we are sailing somewhere that may be off limits, after all we are sailing close to an exclusion zone that is off limits due to the ongoing volcanic activity and the ongoing risk of new pyroclastic flows, but we see that we take this into account. It is the maritime police, who come to check why you are sailing there. We are called to respond on VFH radio channel 16 and they ask us how many people are on board, what our last port of call was, what country we are sailing to and how long we will be there. After they are satisfied with our answers they wish us a nice day and you see them sailing on to Mabul, who get the same questions. The nice thing about a VFH radio is that you can listen in on each other’s interrogations. When we arrive in the bay of Montserrat two hours later, we see the boat of the maritime police neatly moored at the anchor buoy and we joke that their working day is probably over after such a busy day.

Both captains go ashore to register us all at Customs and Immigration. Everything is quite strict here on the island, but after an hour everything is arranged. At the end of the day we get together for a sun-downer and make something to eat together. The next morning Jeroen Rajesh and I take a walk on the island. We get a lift from a car who sees us walking up the mountain and tells us that the next village is still quite a bit of a walk. We decide to go with him and get dropped off in the next village. Here we find a bakery with fresh bread and buns and take this with us for both ourselves and Mabul. It was a nice hike back to the boat. In the afternoon, the Mabul crew went to a National Museum about slavery on the island, while Jeroen and Rajesh’s private hairdresser provided a smooth haircut on board My Motu.

In the evening, we meet ashore at a bar and in addition to Mabul’s crew, we also meet Vernaire and Allanas. Vernaire, who was born and raised on the island of Montserrat, works at the National Museum, where Mabul’s crew visited this afternoon. Her friend Allanas, born and raised in Trinidad, has been living on the island of Montserrat for four years now and is a pilot. They are the only lesbian couple on the small island, with only 3000 inhabitants, where homosexuality is not yet so obvious and everyone knows each other. That evening we all eat together on the boat Mabul and have an incredibly fun evening where Allanas and Vernaire tell us a lot about how life goes on, on the island of Montserrat, under the constant threat of the active Soufrière Hills volcano. That many people suffer from PTSD syndrome as a result and many have been given the opportunity to build a new life in England. Vernaire also tried to build a new life in England for a number of years, but her love for her island of Montserrat made her return in 2018. Allanas told us about her near plane crash, which luckily ended well.

The southern part of the island, including the volcano and the surrounding area, is now an exclusion zone and off limits due to the ongoing volcanic activity and the continued risk of new pyroclastic flows, with special permission from the police and a guide it was possible to us to walk through this area the next morning. While walking through a kind of lunar landscape with the remains of a building here and there from which new vegetation forms, we try to imagine what it must have been like for the people who lived here and had to leave their entire belongings behind. We now walk more than three floors higher than when everything was still lively here. Truly indescribable. We pass the roofs of a school, an office and even the house of the famous singer Arrow, from Montserrat, whose real name is Alphonsus Cassell and had the hit song “Hot Hot Hot” in 1982 that became a hit all over the world. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Montserrat became a popular recording studio destination for musicians seeking a unique, isolated location for their recordings. One of the most famous recording studios on the island was AIR Studios Montserrat, founded in 1979 by British producer and musician Sir George Martin. This studio was used by many famous musicians including Paul McCartney, Duran Duran, The Police and Stevie Wonder. Another famous recording studio on Montserrat was Carib Sound Studios, which was used by artists such as Elton John, Mariah Carey and Jimmy Buffett.The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) is responsible for monitoring the still active Soufrière Hills volcano on Montserrat. Here we watch a film about the history of the Soufrière Hills volcano and meet José, a volcanologist from Spain who has been working here for 6 months now. Allanas and Vernaire invited us all that evening to go out for dinner at “restaurant uncle’s”. José the volcanologist also joins us and this creates another evening full of fun and delicious food. When we say goodbye to José, Allanas and Vernaire at the end of the evening, it will also be a farewell to Mabul’s crew. They will sail on to Antigua early in the morning, while we will sail on to Saint Martin around 11 am. Hopefully we will see them back in Guatemala in about seven months. At the last minute, we get some nice pictures from Allanas, which she took from her plane over the bay and our boats. We’ve only been on Montserrat for three days, but it feels like we’ve made friends with people we’ve known for half our lives. This is the beauty of sailing.

Montserrat

Dan krijgen we het verlossende antwoordt waarop we hadden gewacht. De goedkeuring voor Rajesh zijn visum naar de Bahama’s. Vreugde, trots, blijdschap en een euforisch gevoel zijn de eerste emoties die door ons heengaan, maar direct daarna hebben we ook emoties als verdriet en een gevoel van verlies, want dit betekent dat we binnenkort afscheid zullen nemen van onze goede vrienden, die we tijdens het zeilen hebben gemaakt. We hebben altijd geweten als we eenmaal in het Noorden ter hoogte van Guadeloupe zullen zijn, dat de zeeën de crew van Mabul en ons naar andere landen zullen laten zeilen. Het voelt extra bijzonder als je met de crew van een andere boot zo’n bijzondere klik hebt, waardoor je besluit en om paar maanden samen richting het Noorden te zeilen, de feestdagen samen mee te vieren, samen landen te ontdekken en daar ook weer samen nieuwe mensen te ontmoeten. We zijn dan ook dankbaar voor de ervaringen en herinneringen die we hebben gedeeld met Mabul tot nu toe. We besluiten om ons afscheid nog iets verder uit te stellen en dat we nog een eiland samen zullen ontdekken en dat is Montserrat. 

In het stadje Deshaies, Guadeloupe, waar we uitchecken, is het erg druk door de dagjestoeristen die met bussen tegelijk daar zijn, vermoedelijke vanuit Pointe-a-Pitre waar de cruiseschepen aanleggen. Als we ’s avonds aankomen bij de dinghy aanlegsteiger om een lekkere pizza te gaan eten, blijkt de hele stad getroffen te zijn door stroomuitval. Dat wordt toch koken aan boord. De volgende ochtend zeilen we om 05.30 uur richting Montserrat. Een zeiltocht van 40 NM waar we ongeveer 7 uur over zullen doen. Het is nog donker als we het anker oplichten en koers zetten naar Montserrat. Onze oogjes zijn nog klein als we de zeilen hijsen en nemen daarna nog wat slaperig plaats in de cockpit, waarbij ik aan een opmerking van Rajesh moet denken over zijn brein. Rajesh zegt soms: “On the right side there is nothing left and on the left side there is nothing right.” Op dit moment voelt het zeker zo, na nachten heen en weer geslingerd te zijn op rollerige ankerplaatsen, waarbij je dan vaak geen oog dicht doet. Starend over het water, terwijl de zon langzaam opkomt achter de bergtoppen van Guadeloupe, waarvan we afscheid nemen, en Mabul die vlak achter ons zeilt, worden we langzaam wakkerder. De kleuren die de zonsopkomst met zich meebrengt levert een paar prachtige foto’s op. 

Van het eiland Montserrat had ik nog niet eerder gehoord, voordat de crew van Mabul ons meevroeg om dit eiland nog samen te gaan ontdekken. Het is een eiland dat door meerdere soorten natuurgewelden is getroffen, met als belangrijkste, Orkaan Hugo die op 17 september 1989 Montserrat trof en 90% van alle huizen en infrastructuur heeft vernietigd en later nadat net alles weer was opgebouwd in 1997 vernietigde de Soufrière Hills-vulkaan het zuidelijke deel van Montserrat. De Soufrière Hills-vulkaan, die nog steeds actief is en in de recente geschiedenis verschillende keren is uitgebarsten, met de belangrijkste uitbarstingen in 1997 en van 2010 tot 2019.

Zodra we dichterbij het zuidoosten van het eiland Montserrat zeilen is de weg die de vulkanische activiteit heeft achtergelaten door de pyroklastische stromen, dit zijn snel bewegende mengsels van heet gas, as en rots fragmenten die met hoge snelheden de hellingen van de vulkaan afdalen en alles op hun pad vernietigen, vanaf het water goed waarneembaar. Wat lijkt op een permanente wolk boven de top van de vulkaan, blijkt later het de naar zwavel ruikende gassen te zijn, die omhoogkomen, van de nog steeds actieve Soufrière Hills-vulkaan. Als we bij de zuidwestzijde van het eiland zeilen is de volledige verwoesting van de hoofdstad Plymouth te zien. Als we later tijdens een rondleiding op het eiland over een deel van dit verwoeste gebied lopen, blijkt dat er de hoogte van de hoeveelheid rots fragmenten en as tot bijna 3 verdiepingen is. De zwavelgassen, die naar rotte eieren ruiken, ruiken we goed aan de zuidwestzijde, waarbij we in eerste instantie denken dat er iets ligt te bederven in de vriezer of koelkast, maar we ons dan realiseren dat het de gassen van de Soufrière Hills-vulkaan komt. Langzaam zeilen we verder omhoog en vragen ons af hoe het voelt voor mensen die op dit eiland wonen om steeds maar weer geconfronteerd te worden met de onzekerheid die het met zich meebrengt om vlak bij een actieve vulkaan te wonen. In de verte zien we een boot met hoge snelheid op ons afkomen, waarbij we eerst snel kijken of we ergens zeilen wat misschien niet verboden terrein is, we zeilen immers dicht langs een uitsluitingszone dat verboden terrein is vanwege de aanhoudende vulkanische activiteit en het aanhoudend risico van nieuwe pyroklastische stromen, maar we zien dat we hier netjes rekening mee houden. Het is de maritieme politie, die polshoogte komen nemen waarom je daar zeilt. We worden via de VFH-radiokanaal 16 opgeroepen om te reageren en ze vragen ons met hoeveel personen we aan boord zijn, wat onze laatste aanloophaven was, naar welk land we zeilen en hoe lang we daar zullen blijven. Nadat ze tevreden zijn met onze antwoorden wensen ze ons een prettige dag en zie je ze verder varen naar Mabul, die dezelfde vragen krijgen. Het leuke van een VFH-radio is dat je kan meeluisteren met elkaars ondervragingen. Als we twee uur later aankomen in de baai van Montserrat zien we de boot van de maritieme politie al netjes aan de ankerboei ligt en maken we grapjes over dat hun werkdag er vast alweer opzit na zo’n drukke dag.

Beide kapteins gaan aan wal om ons allemaal bij de Douane en Immigratie aan te melden. Alles gaat vrij strikt hier op het eiland, maar na een uurtje is alles geregeld. Aan het einde van de dag komen we bij elkaar voor een sun-downer en maken we samen wat te eten. De volgende ochtend maken Jeroen Rajesh en ik een wandeling over het eiland. We krijgen een lift van een automobilist die ons de berg op ziet lopen en vertelt ons dat het volgende dorp nog wel even wandelen is. We besluiten om met hem mee te gaan en laten ons afzetten in het eerstvolgende dorp. Hier vinden we een bakker met vers brood en bolletjes en nemen dit mee voor zowel onszelf als voor Mabul. Het was een leuke wandeltocht terug naar de boot. ’s Middags is de crew van Mabul naar een Nationaal museum geweest over slavernij van het eiland, terwijl aan boord van My Motu de privé kapper van Jeroen en Rajesh weer voor een vlotte coupe heeft gezorgd.

’s Avonds spreken we af aan wal bij een bar en naast de crew van Mabul, ontmoeten we ook Vernaire en Allanas. Vernaire, die geboren en getogen is op het eiland Montserrat, werkt in het Nationaal museum, waar de crew van Mabul vanmiddag is geweest. Haar vriendin Allanas, geboren en getogen in Trinidad, woont alweer vier jaar op het eiland Montserrat en is piloot. Ze zijn het enige lesbische stel op het kleine eiland, met maar 3000 inwoners, waar homoseksualiteit nog niet zo vanzelfsprekend is en iedereen elkaar kent. Die avond eten we met zijn allen op de boot Mabul en hebben we een ongelofelijke leuke avond waar Allanas en Vernaire ons veel vertellen over hoe het leven verder gaat op het eiland Montserrat, onder de constante dreigingen van de actieve Soufrière Hills-vulkaan. Dat veel mensen hierdoor lijden aan het PTSD-syndroom en velen de mogelijkheid hebben gekregen om een nieuw leven op te bouwen in Engeland. Ook Vernaire heeft een aantal jaar in Engeland een nieuw leven proberen op te bouwen, maar haar liefde voor haar eiland Montserrat heeft haar in 2018 definitief doen terugkeren. Allanas vertelde ons nog over haar bijna vliegtuigongeluk, wat gelukkig goed is afgelopen. 

Het zuidelijke deel van het eiland, inclusief de vulkaan en het omliggende gebied, is nu een uitsluitingszone en is verboden terrein vanwege de aanhoudende vulkanische activiteit en het aanhoudend risico van nieuwe pyroklastische stromen, met speciale toestemming van de politie en een gids was het mogelijk voor ons om de volgende ochtend door dit gebied te lopen. Al lopend door een soort maanlandschap met her en der nog resten van een gebouw waaruit nieuwe begroeiing zich vormt, proberen we ons in te leven hoe het moet zijn geweest voor de mensen die hier hebben gewoond en hun hele hebben en houden hebben moeten achterlaten. Ruim drie verdiepingen hoger lopen we nu, dan toen alles hier nog levendig was. Werkelijk onbeschrijfelijk. We komen langs de daken van een school, een kantoor en zelfs het huis van de beroemde zanger Arrow, uit Montserrat, wiens echt naam Alphonsus Cassell is en in 1982 de hit “Hot Hot Hot” heeft gehad dat een hit werd over de hele wereld. Eind jaren zeventig en begin jaren tachtig werd Montserrat een populaire bestemming voor opnamestudio’s voor muzikanten die op zoek waren naar een unieke, geïsoleerde locatie voor hun opnames. Een van de beroemdste opnamestudio’s op het eiland was AIR Studios Montserrat, die in 1979 werd opgericht door de Britse producer en muzikant Sir George Martin. Deze studio werd gebruikt door vele beroemde muzikanten, waaronder Paul McCartney, Duran Duran, The Police en Stevie Wonder. Een andere beroemde opnamestudio op Montserrat was Carib Sound Studios, die werd gebruikt door artiesten als Elton John, Mariah Carey en Jimmy Buffett. Het Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) is verantwoordelijk voor het monitoren van de nog actieve Soufrière Hills-vulkaan op Montserrat. Hier bekijken we een film over de historie van de Soufrière Hills-vulkaan en ontmoeten we, José een vulkanoloog uit Spanje die hier nu 6 maanden werkt. Allanas en Vernaire hebben ons allemaal uitgenodigd die avond om uit eten te gaan bij “restaurant uncle”. Ook José de vulkanoloog schuift aan en zo ontstaat er wederom een avond vol gezelligheid en heerlijk eten. Als we aan het einde van de avond afscheid nemen van José, Allanas en Vernaire, wordt het ook een afscheid van de crew van Mabul. Zij zeilen al vroeg in de ochtend verder naar Antigua, terwijl wij rond een uur of 11 verder zullen zeilen naar Saint Martin. Hopelijk zien we ze terug in Guatemala over ongeveer zeven maanden. Op de valreep krijgen we nog een aantal mooie foto’s van Allanas, die ze heeft gemaakt vanuit haar vliegtuig over de baai en onze boten. We zijn maar drie dagen op Montserrat geweest, maar het voelt alsof we vriendschappen hebben gesloten met mensen die we ons halve leven al kennen. Dit is nu de schoonheid van het zeilen.
